BAMB Reversible Design Competition
Our growing cities are constantly facing new needs for qualitative housing, work, logistics and mobility. Still, buildings are usually created with only one function in mind. When societal needs or user preferences change, these mono-functional buildings usually become out-dated or even obsolete, resulting in a high rate of building vacancy and premature demolition.
Today, building materials end up as waste when no longer needed. To create a sustainable future, the building sector needs to move from a linear economy of -take, make, waste- towards a circular economy. In a circular industry model, continuous loops extend the lifecycles of building components, systems and materials by facilitating their maintenance, reuse, redistribution, refurbishment, re-manufacturing and high-quality recycling. Materials stay in circulation longer, significantly reducing the waste and the use of virgin materials, which in turn will lead to less reliance on scarce resources and a decreased environmental impact.
From building design point of view, it is crucial to understand the capabilities of buildings, to transform what is today a negative impact of build environment to a positive one. The complex multi-scale capacities of buildings provide massive potential for a broad range of positive correlation with nature’s systems as well as value redefinition of buildings and its components.
More information will come.
Register to the competition
The registration for the competition is not open yet. UMinho will collect the information to monitor the number of teams that will be in the competition (for BAMB internal use only) and also to sent to each team important information about the competition itself. Uminho will be also using the email adresses to answer students specific questions. This information will be saved until the end of the project. After the end of the project, UMinho will delete all information.
If you want to know more, please see the “Bamb Competition Terms of reference and Procedures for the protection of Personal Data” above.
