A Blueprint to enable a circular built environment

The transition towards a circular and dynamic built environment will require several large scale changes in the current building value chains, boosting opportunities and eliminating barriers related to a circular building sector. These changes often go beyond technical innovations. Materials Passports and Reversible Design Protocols are recognised as important systemic tools in order to start this transition.

A Blueprint is developed in BAMB as a guide for front runners and key actors within the defined building value chain (including policy makers) to implement these systemic tools.

The blueprint  focus on the European context and more specifically the countries involved in the BAMB project and list short-term actions and long-term activities that would enable the transition, such as disruptive interventions and supporting slow evolutions. Each of the listed actions is linked to opportunities and barriers and suggestions are given on how to initiate them and which actor(s) need to be involved. Missing actors are clearly identified. The listed actions within the Blueprint are linked with actors/front runners within a desired network configuration – characterised by a circular value chain.

During the project, the Blueprint will be refined based on reflexive monitoring of the pilot cases in BAMB. This way the project work will test and improve the blueprint. Often encountered systemic barriers – such as legal limitations, financial constraints, shortage in supply of adequate solutions will be investigated in the Blueprint as well as practical ways to bypass them.
