State of the art Circular buildings

BAMB will provide an overview of context for Materials Passports and Reversible Building Design and of currently known opportunities and barriers based on state-of-the-art reports. The main technical, economic, financial, environmental, legal, spatial and logistic drivers/causes for every known (type of) actor within the current value chain will be investigated. Focussing on the European context, and more specifically the countries involved within the BAMB project, the following inter-disciplinary aspects will be investigated:

  • value chain at building product level
  • value chain at building level
  • availability of information between actors along the value chain, with a specific point of concern related to the applicability of building information modelling (BIM) within the current building practice in EU (i.e. review of BIM standardisation within EU and review of EU and International BIM related systems and plug-ins related to sustainability)
  • identification of commonly used methods to refurbish and maintain buildings for major construction types
  • elaboration on the cause of demolition of buildings and major maintenance needs of buildings
  • estimation of the availability, composition, amount and quality of C&D Waste in the EU
  • estimation of re-use potential of buildings, components and materials within the existing buildings stock
  • identification of existing (niche) solutions/applications/strategies, key actors and barriers to accelerate the reuse of:
    • residues as material resources (not necessarily for building products)
    • (generic) components applicable for different buildings trans-functional buildings
  • identification of existing initiatives and regulations impeding or supporting reuse of materials, components and buildings
  • identification of existing financial and business models impeding or supporting reuse of resources, materials, components and buildings
